The Baron is hiring! Editor-in-Chief

Description & Duties Start Date: January 1, 2018
End Date: December 31, 2018
Pay period: Jan. 1st to April 30th; September 1st to December 31st
Minimum hours: 20 per week
Payment method: Bi-weekly

The Baron is the student-run press for the University of New Brunswick Saint John. It publishes online during the academic year as content becomes available.

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the overall editorial aspect including content.

Duties include:

  • Hiring all remaining positions after the Editor has been hired by selection committee.
  • Assigning stories to staff and volunteer writers, and advising photographers as to which events should be attended for photos.
  • Ensuring there is sufficient content being published to the site.
  • Editing stories from all sections for style, grammar, and libel.
  • Providing staff with guidance, support and assistance, including photographers.
  • Maintain daily office hours.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and take minutes of all meetings.
  • Fulfill such other duties as do not properly fall to any other staff.

Skills that are an asset to this position include:

  • Must be a UNB Saint John undergraduate student;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, Google Suite, WordPress, and email.
  • Comprehension of English language grammar and rules of style.
  • Knowledge of the UNBSJ campus, particularly student life.

The Editor-in-Chief reports to The Baron Board of Directors and may be removed by a two-thirds majority vote of the Board.

A portion of the Editor-in-Chief’s salary will be remitted during the summer for part-time work including checking emails and phone messages as well as preparing the Frosh edition of the paper.

Business Manager

Start Date: January 1, 2018
End Date: December 31, 2018
Pay period: Jan. 1st to April 30th; September 1st to December 31st
Minimum hours: 10 hours per week; 20% of advertising revenue
Payment method: Bi-weekly

The Business Manager is responsible for the overall image and promotion of the Baron as well as advertising sales.

Duties include:

  • Campus outreach and event planning.
  • Managing ad sales, creating ad content & following up on sales leads.
  • Working with the editor to coordinate volunteer recruitment.
  • Responsible for executing the Baron’s marketing strategy.   
  • Create and manage promotional campaigns.
  • Maintain daily office hours.   

Skills that are an asset to this position include:

  • Must be a UNB Saint John undergraduate student.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, WordPress, Google Suite, and email.
  • Comprehension of English language grammar and rules of style.
  • Knowledge of the UNB Saint John campus, particularly student life.
